ArtCare fine art conservation-restoration studio was established in central London in the early 1980s by Peter Koneczny. Clients include museums, galleries and private collectors in the UK and internationally. Peter Koneczny specialises in oil and acrylic paintings and in polychrome sculpture, and his new studio is able to accommodate exceptionally large paintings and works of art.

Throughout his career Peter has worked on Gothic paintings, Old Master paintings, 19th century and Modern and Contemporary paintings, polychrome sculptures and murals, by both greater and lesser known artists, some of whom are listed on the margins of this page,

With his extensive knowledge of chemistry and art materials Peter has developed advanced methods and materials for the cleaning and conservation and restoration of paintings.
His interest in Modern and Contemporary art has led to the development of cleaning materials and methods for both acrylic paintings, and acrylic and oil stained unprimed canvases that are extremely challenging to clean.

old master painting cleaning, conservation and restoration

Peter Koneczny obtained his M.A. degree through studying for seven years at two faculties, Conservation and Restoration of Paintings and Polychrome Sculpture, and Conservation and Restoration of Stone Sculpture and Architectural Elements at the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun, Poland. This included advanced studies in chemistry and art history.
He is a fellow of BAPCR (The British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers), and has served as a member on the Council and as Chairman of the Association.

Peter has published numerous articles on the conservation and restoration of paintings and has contributed chapters to the book Mixing and Matching: Approaches to Retouching Paintings.

He researched and developed B72 Retouching Gels a modern non-ageing, light fast painting retouching media which are used by restorers in museums and conservation studios throughout the world.

B72 Retouching Gels and their properties and applications were presented at the Retouching Complex Surfaces Conference at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2007. The talk ‘Paraloid B72 Gels as media for retouching’ was presented by Patricia Smithen (conservator of modern and contemporary paintings at the Tate Gallery, London).

Peter Koneczny, in his determination to match perfectly any colour when retouching, has created one of the world's largest collection of pigments containing over 1600 different pigments used in art throughout the ages. This includes hundreds of modern organic pigments of which many are now obsolete and no longer available anywhere else in the world. The Tate Gallery has used samples from his collection to create an infra red spectra library of modern organic pigments that enables identification of pigments on modern paintings.
