Paintings and works of art, on arrival in the studio, undergo a thorough examination of their condition before any treatment is undertaken.
Different techniques of photography can reveal hidden information not normally visible to the naked eye.
In Ultra Violet light, commonly called blue light, the fluorescence reveals retouching and overpaint, and the differences in various media used on the painting.
In Infra Red light underdrawing with pencil or black paint, hidden under the paint layer, is visible. Infra Red light also reveals retouching, which may not be visible under Ultra Violet light examination through being obscured by highly florescent varnish. Infra Red light photography is also used for finding traces of signatures.
The details of a painting obscured by very dark yellowed varnish and dirt can become visible in monochromatic Sodium Light.
