Peter Koneczny has responded to the complexity of problems presented by modern and contemporary paintings, particularly by unvarnished oils, acrylics, flat field and unprimed stained canvas paintings, by developing over decades specific techniques and materials for cleaning and retouching in his studio.
The B72 Retouching Gels he has also researched and developed are indispensable media for the retouching/inpainting of modern and contemporary works of art. They allow the conservator-restorer to imitate idiosyncratic painting materials and techniques used by modern and contemporary artists.
B72 Retouching Gels and their properties and applications were presented at the Retouching Complex Surfaces Conference at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2007. The talk ‘Paraloid B72 Gels as media for retouching’ was presented by Patricia Smithen (conservator of modern and contemporary paintings at the Tate Gallery, London).
